京都（きょうと）は、日本の歴史的都市。794年に日本の首都に定められた都城平安京にあたり、都として日本の政治・文化の中心地となって、「首都」を意味する普通名詞としての「京の都」「京都」が都市の固有名詞となった。古くはしばしば中国王朝の都となった洛陽に因み、京洛、洛中、洛陽などといわれた。よって、京の都に昇ることを上京、上洛と言い、現在でも京都以外の地方（東京も含む）から京都へ行くことを「上洛する」と言う。
京都の歴史
京都は、桓武天皇が長岡京より平安京に遷都したことに始まる。それは、長岡京の建設責任者であった藤原種継が暗殺されたことや、南都寺院の影響から脱するためであった。天武系の都を脱して天智系の都を造るという意図もあった。
