Basel (französisch Bâle, italienisch Basilea) ist eine politische Gemeinde, Hauptstadt des Kantons Basel-Stadt und nach Zürich und Genf die drittgrösste Stadt der Schweiz.

Die Stadt Basel liegt am Dreiländereck Schweiz-Deutschland-Frankreich und bildet zusammen mit den Landgemeinden Riehen und Bettingen den Kanton Basel-Stadt.

Basel wird unterteilt in Kleinbasel auf der rechten und Grossbasel auf der linken Rheinseite. In die Stadt eingegliedert ist das frühere Fischerdorf Kleinhüningen. Das Zentrum Basels ist die Altstadt in Grossbasel rund um den Marktplatz, wo auch das Rathaus aus dem 14. Jahrhundert steht. Mit ihren engen Strassen und Gassen lädt die Altstadt auf beiden Seiten der Mittleren Rheinbrücke zum Flanieren ein. In die teilweise vom Autoverkehr befreite Innenstadt gelangen die Besucher mit dem Tram.
